Photobiomodulation:
Light as a Biological Signal.
- Photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to change cell behavior through the mitochondria, mainly via cytochrome c oxidase.
- Wavelength sets depth: red light works near the surface for skin; near-infrared reaches muscle, tendon and joint.
- Dose follows a biphasic curve. Too little does nothing and too much can blunt the response, so programmed parameters matter.
- Controlled trials support collagen and skin changes, and a meta-analysis of 39 trials supports improved exercise performance and reduced fatigue.
- The NEO Light runs eight pre-set therapies: four core modes (Restore, Pulse, Calm, Cleanse) and four combo protocols that pair two modes back to back.
Light is information. Plants run on it, your circadian rhythm is set by it, and inside every cell the mitochondria respond to specific wavelengths of it. Photobiomodulation, the clinical name for red and near-infrared light therapy, is the use of those wavelengths at controlled doses to change how cells produce energy, manage inflammation and repair.
The Mechanism: Mitochondria Read Light
The primary target is cytochrome c oxidase, the final enzyme of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Under stress, nitric oxide binds to this enzyme and slows energy production. Red and near-infrared photons are absorbed by the enzyme and help release that nitric oxide, which restores electron flow and raises ATP output.
That first event sets off a cascade. A brief, controlled burst of reactive oxygen species acts as a signal. Nitric oxide release improves local blood flow. Transcription factors switch on genes for cell survival, antioxidant defense, proliferation and new protein synthesis. In stressed or inflamed tissue, the net effect in the research is lower oxidative stress and lower inflammatory signaling, including a shift of activated macrophages away from the pro-inflammatory M1 state.
The right dose.
A measurable cellular response.
Wavelength Determines Depth
Not all light reaches the same tissue. Shorter wavelengths are absorbed near the surface; longer near-infrared wavelengths travel deeper. The NEO Light at BIOGENEX uses six:
| Wavelength | Color | Primary target |
|---|---|---|
| 415 nm | Blue | Skin surface, blemish-causing bacteria |
| 532 nm | Green | Calming protocols, light sensitivity, skin tone |
| 633 nm | Red | Skin, collagen, superficial tissue |
| 810 nm | Near-infrared | Muscle and deeper soft tissue |
| 850 nm | Near-infrared | Muscle, joint, recovery |
| 940 nm | Near-infrared | Deepest penetration, joints and connective tissue |
Dose Is Not Optional
Photobiomodulation follows a biphasic dose response. Too little light produces no effect. The right dose stimulates. Too much light, delivered for too long, can blunt or reverse the benefit. Irradiance, wavelength mix, time and pulsing all have to be controlled, which is why a programmed full-body system outperforms improvised sessions with a handheld panel.
Pulsing is a separate variable. A review from the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital found evidence that pulsed light can produce effects different from continuous light. That is why the NEO Light includes a pulsed program with variable frequency alongside its continuous programs.
What the Research Shows
- Performance and fatigue. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 39 randomized trials found that photobiomodulation in the 655 to 950 nm range improved time to exhaustion, repetitions and peak torque, and lowered blood lactate compared with placebo. The quality of the evidence was very low to moderate, and dosing varied widely between trials.
- Skin and collagen. In a controlled trial of 136 volunteers, 30 sessions of red and broadband light improved complexion, reduced measured skin roughness, and increased intradermal collagen density on ultrasound compared with controls.
- Inflammation. One of the most reproducible findings across animal and clinical studies is a reduction in inflammation in joints, injured tissue, lungs and the brain.
- Green light and migraine. In a preliminary trial of 29 migraine patients, daily green-light exposure significantly reduced headache days in both episodic and chronic migraine, with no reported side effects. Larger trials are needed.
The honest summary: photobiomodulation has a well-described mechanism and a growing body of controlled human data, strongest for skin, musculoskeletal recovery and performance. Protocols and devices vary, and results depend on dose.
Eight Pre-Set Therapies, Built In
The NEO Light ships with eight pre-set therapies, so every session runs the same parameters with no guesswork from the operator. Four are core modes. Four are combo protocols that run two core modes back to back, with no switching or repositioning between them.
One distinction drives how we use them. The visible colors (red, green, blue, and pink where they mix) act near the surface, a fraction of an inch into the skin. The invisible near-infrared wavelengths at 810, 850 and 940 nm penetrate deeply, reaching muscle, joint and bone. Restore, Pulse and Calm all include near-infrared. Cleanse is the skin-focused mode.
| Core mode | Light | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Restore | Red + near-infrared | Inflammation, pain, recovery, anti-aging and collagen |
| Pulse | Red + near-infrared, pulsed | The pulsed version of Restore, favored by athletes for recovery |
| Calm | Green + near-infrared | Down-regulation, migraine-prone and light-sensitive clients, the appearance of dark spots |
| Cleanse | Red + blue | Reducing surface bacteria and improving skin clarity |
| Combo protocol | Sequence | Built for |
|---|---|---|
| Optimal Wellbeing | Restore + Calm | Full-body balance: restorative red and near-infrared, then the settling effect of green light |
| Strength Serenity | Pulse + Calm | Cellular activation followed by deep relaxation in one session |
| Sports Recovery | Restore + Pulse | Post-training: reduce inflammation, boost circulation and recharge |
| Radiant Recovery | Restore + Cleanse | Recovery for the body and clarity for the skin in one visit |
Each wavelength can also be adjusted independently, so a BIOGENEX clinician can build a custom protocol when your goal calls for it.
- Eye protection. For Restore, Pulse and Calm, keep your eyes closed or wear the provided goggles. For Cleanse, goggles are required for the full session because of the blue light.
- Timing. Blue light suppresses melatonin and raises alertness, so clients who are sensitive to it avoid Cleanse in the evening.
How Often, and What to Expect
A standard single-mode session is 10 minutes, which delivers a full therapeutic dose. More time is not more benefit: photobiomodulation has a ceiling, and too much exposure leads to diminishing returns. We schedule one application per day, three to five sessions per week, with at least one rest day. You can run two different modes in a row, such as Restore then Calm, but not the same mode twice.
- First 1 to 5 sessions. Clients most often notice better mood, full-body relaxation, more physical and mental energy, mild pain relief, and migraine relief with Calm.
- 20 to 40 sessions. Greater endurance, shorter recovery time, moderate to significant pain relief, visible skin changes, and faster healing of injuries.
We screen before the first session for pregnancy, pacemakers, active cancer, photosensitizing medications, active bleeding, high fever, and severe heart or kidney disease. Clients with skin conditions use the bed under clinician guidance. Clients on levothyroxine have their thyroid labs watched more closely, since NEO Science reports that some users on thyroid medication have needed dose adjustments.
Why BIOGENEX Partnered With NEO Science
- Six wavelengths in one bed. Blue 415 nm, green 532 nm, red 633 nm, and near-infrared 810, 850 and 940 nm, with full-body red and blue light.
- Clinical-grade output. 31,680 tripartite spectral LEDs. Irradiance is measured where the light meets the skin to confirm a therapeutic dose, within the 20 to 100 mW/cm² range considered effective for most applications.
- Repeatable protocols. Four core modes, four combo protocols and saved custom programs mean session three is delivered exactly like session one, with every session logged.
- Built to last. UL certified, a 5-year whole-system warranty and a 10-year LED warranty, plus staff certification through NEO Science training.
- One integrated lab. The same partner behind our Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chamber and NEO Luna cryotherapy, with one service network.
How It Fits the BIOGENEX Protocol
Photobiomodulation is a session most clients can use several times per week. We place it after hard training for recovery, on rest days for skin and inflammation goals, and after Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy when tissue repair is the priority, and after cryotherapy, so improved circulation carries the anti-inflammatory response through the body. Single-mode sessions run 10 minutes, combo protocols 20 minutes, and both draw from APEX Lab credits.
