Infrared Sauna:
Heat as a Cardiovascular Training Dose.

Performance Lab · Infrared SaunaDwight (DJ) DiMartino, APRN, FNP-C10 Min ReadUpdated October 2026
The Signal in Brief
  • Heat is a cardiovascular stressor that the body adapts to, much like training: higher heart rate, vasodilation, plasma volume expansion and heat shock protein production.
  • In 2,315 Finnish men followed for about 20 years, 4 to 7 sauna sessions per week were associated with substantially lower sudden cardiac death, cardiovascular death, all-cause mortality and dementia risk.
  • Far-infrared sauna specifically has controlled data: improved endothelial function in men with cardiac risk factors and clinical gains in a randomized heart failure trial.
  • The Sunlighten mPulse combines near, mid and far infrared with a red and near-infrared LED panel, using patented SoloCarbon heating technology.
  • In the ENGINEER THE APEX model, sauna is a measured dose: frequency, duration and pairing are prescribed, then tracked.

Heat may be the most underrated longevity tool available. The strongest data come from Finland, where sauna is a weekly habit for most of the population. But the mechanism is universal: repeated, controlled heat stress trains the cardiovascular system in ways that look remarkably like moderate exercise. Infrared sauna delivers that stress at a lower air temperature, which makes longer, more consistent sessions possible.

How Infrared Sauna Works

A traditional sauna heats the air, typically to 80 to 100°C (176 to 212°F), and that air heats you. An infrared sauna heats you directly. Infrared energy is radiant heat: it passes through the air and is absorbed by the body, mainly by water in the skin and superficial tissue, raising tissue and core temperature while the cabin stays around 45 to 65°C (113 to 149°F).

Infrared is a spectrum, not a single thing:

  • Far infrared is absorbed strongly by water at the skin and drives a deep sweat and a rise in core temperature.
  • Mid infrared reaches somewhat deeper soft tissue and supports circulation and muscle relaxation.
  • Near infrared penetrates deepest at low heat and overlaps with photobiomodulation, the cellular light effect described in our red light article.

What Heat Does to the Body

During a session, heart rate rises toward what you would see in light to moderate exercise, blood vessels dilate, and blood flow shifts to the skin. Repeated over weeks, the body adapts: plasma volume expands, endothelial function improves, and cells increase production of heat shock proteins that help protect and refold damaged proteins. A short-term rise in growth hormone and a later drop in blood pressure have also been described. This is heat as training stimulus.

Train the heart.
Protect the brain.
Without another workout.

The Literature

  • Cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. In the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease cohort, 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men were followed for a median of 20.7 years. Compared with one session per week, 4 to 7 sessions per week were associated with a 63 percent lower risk of sudden cardiac death, along with lower fatal coronary disease, fatal cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. Sessions longer than 19 minutes carried more benefit than sessions under 11 minutes.
  • Dementia. In the same cohort, 4 to 7 sessions per week were associated with a 66 percent lower risk of dementia and a 65 percent lower risk of Alzheimer's disease.
  • Vascular function with far infrared. In men with coronary risk factors, two weeks of daily 15-minute far-infrared sauna at 60°C significantly improved flow-mediated dilation, a direct measure of endothelial function.
  • Heart failure. In the multicenter randomized WAON-CHF trial of 149 hospitalized patients with advanced heart failure, ten days of far-infrared thermal therapy improved symptoms class, six-minute walk distance and heart size on imaging, with no serious adverse events.
  • Mood. In a randomized, sham-controlled trial, a single session of whole-body hyperthermia produced a rapid reduction in depression scores that persisted for six weeks.

Context matters. The Finnish data are observational and studied traditional sauna in men, so they show strong association rather than proof of cause. The far-infrared trials are smaller but controlled. Together they make heat one of the better-supported longevity habits available.

The Sunlighten mPulse: Patented Technology

We chose the Sunlighten mPulse because it delivers all three infrared ranges plus light therapy from one controlled system.

  • 3 in 1 infrared. Patented heating that delivers near, mid and far infrared. Sunlighten notes that a single emitter cannot produce all three peaks at once because each needs a different temperature, so the mPulse uses dedicated elements for each.
  • SoloCarbon heaters. A patented ceramic coating with copper chromium, developed with chemist Dr. Ronald Lewarchik and covered by U.S. Patent 8,737,827, engineered for very high infrared emissivity.
  • Integrated red and near-infrared LED panel. Adds photobiomodulation to the heat session.
  • PulseIQ control and Smart Wellness programs. Pre-built programs for cardiovascular health, muscle recovery, skin, immunity, relaxation and detoxification, with independent control of near, mid and far infrared intensity.
  • Low-EMF construction and a design informed by third-party clinical research on infrared wavelengths.

How Sauna Fits ENGINEER THE APEX

The BIOGENEX model is simple: assess, engineer, sustain. Sauna is treated the same way as any other part of the protocol.

  • Assess. Blood pressure, resting heart rate, lipid and metabolic markers, and PNOĒ cardiorespiratory data establish the baseline.
  • Engineer. A prescribed dose, typically three to four sessions per week of about 20 minutes, built up gradually, with hydration and electrolytes planned. Paired with cold plunge for contrast or with recovery days after hard training.
  • Sustain. Re-measure, adjust, and let the cardiovascular gains compound alongside training and the rest of the protocol.

One note for men planning a family: repeated heat exposure can temporarily reduce sperm production. We factor sauna frequency into fertility planning for men on or considering testosterone therapy.

Who Should Not Use the Sauna

Heat is a cardiovascular load. We screen for recent heart attack, unstable angina, severe aortic stenosis, uncontrolled blood pressure, low blood pressure or fainting on standing, pregnancy, heat intolerance, and medications that affect heat tolerance or hydration. No alcohol before or during a session.
